How to pass PRINCE2 7 Foundation: a two-week study plan that actually works
17 September 2026 · Carl Pitts
The Foundation exam is not hard, but it is unforgiving about vocabulary. Sixty questions, sixty minutes, thirty-six to pass, no negative marking. Almost everyone who fails does so because they revised the method and not the wording.
Know where the marks actually are
The syllabus weighting is public, and it is lopsided:
| Area | Weighting |
|---|---|
| Key concepts | 3% |
| Principles | 8% |
| People | 14% |
| Practices | 60% |
| Processes | 15% |
Practices are six questions in every ten. If your revision time is split evenly across the manual, you are spending most of it in the wrong place.
Week one: build the vocabulary
Days one to three, read for coverage, not comprehension. Skim each practice and write a single index card per practice with its purpose in one sentence and its named management products.
Days four to seven, drill the definitions. Foundation questions test whether you can tell a risk from an issue, a stage from a management stage, and a product description from a product breakdown structure. Say each definition out loud until it is automatic.
Week two: exam conditions only
Sit a full timed paper on day eight, cold, before you feel ready. The score does not matter - the point is to find which practices collapse under time pressure.
Then alternate: one area drill, one timed paper, one review of every wrong answer. Do not move on from a wrong answer until you can say why the other three options were wrong, not just why yours was.
Exam-day tactics
- One minute per question. If a question takes more than ninety seconds, flag it and move on.
- Answer every question. No negative marking means a guess is free.
- Watch for absolutes. "Always", "never" and "must" are usually distractors in negative questions.
- Read the last line of the question first. It tells you what is actually being asked.
Where to practise
Use the PRINCE2 7 Foundation syllabus to see the official learning outcomes, then work through Mock Exams A, B and C in the exam simulator. The papers are built to the real syllabus weighting, so your practice score is a fair signal of your readiness.
